Reps considering energy drinks ban in Nigeria by Ogala Emmanuel

A motion seeking a legislative ban on the sale of energy drinks in Nigeria has gained a spot on the agenda paper of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
The motion is promoted by Yacoob Bush-Alebiosu, member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, Lagos. Mr. Bush-Alebiosu said the use – abuse – of energy drinks has endangered a generation of Nigerians guzzling the drinks despite its health hazards.
The motion is not popular with other members and failed a chance to be heard on December 13. Mr. Bush-Alebiosu promoted the motion alone.
He argued that several brands of energy drinks such as Red Bull, Power Horse, Vault, Red alert and Burn contain high levels of stimulants and ingredients with high health risks. He said health risks like kidney damages, seizures and strokes, high blood pressure, and heart and brain dysfunction may arise from the consumption of these drinks.
“The heart diseases caused by the consumption of these energy drinks, most especially among young people, is alarming, and threatening the health of the younger generations,” Mr. Bush-Alebiosu said.
The lawmaker is the first Nigerian government official to call for an outright ban on energy drinks. In 2008, the former director General National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Dora Akunyili, warned the public about the hazards of energy drinks for the first time.
Mrs. Akunyili’s approach, which is still sustained at the agency, was to persuade consumers, especially pregnant women, off the products, citing its high level of sugar and caffeine.
In 2011, as the use of energy drinks grew amongst young adults in Nigeria, Mrs. Akunyili’s concerns was re-echoed by NAFDAC with a higher alert level.
During an advocacy workshop for pharmaceutical inspectors last year, NAFDAC’s Director of Inspection and Establishment, Hauwa Keri, advised the government to find a way of “arresting the situation” after she warned that “the future of the country is at stake.”
There are over 31 energy drinks sold in the open markets in Nigeria. Energy drinks are favourites for Muslim young adults observing the religious alcohol abstinence. It is also a favourite cocktail ingredient for alcohol drinking socialites in Nigeria. Often, cups of energy drinks are mixed with highly alcoholic drinks like Vodka and Whiskeys as enhancers.
According to Mr. Bush-Alebiosu, mixing these drinks with alcohol masks caffeine intoxication and increases the fatality of the drinks.
Although NAFDAC regularly swoop markets for fake and unregistered energy drinks, it is yet to raise the lethality quotient of the drinks.
Governments of Denmark, Germany, Norway and France have placed different level of bans on energy drinks.
Like most other heavily regulated consumables, Nigeria with its large population and weaker government agencies, is a flourishing market for energy drinks.
When next the motion comes up for hearing, the lawmaker hopes to persuade his colleagues to muster a strong voice that will coax Nigeria’s health Ministry to immediately ban sales, distribution and consumption of all brands of caffeinated energy drinks in all locations across Nigeria.

Prior to the appointment, Mr. Bajoga was the Chairman of the ruling PDP, in the state.

The post of Deputy Governor became vacant in the state after Patrick Yakowa, the former governor of the state, died in a crash penultimate Saturday

Armed SSS officers in 10 vehicles arrest editor, reporter in Kaduna raid. by Sani Tukur

The Nigerian SSS men wore quasi-military uniforms when they stormed the homes of the journalists.
In what appears a military-era Gestapo tactics, the State Security Service, SSS, stormed the house of two journalists who write for Al-Mizan, a Hausa language newspaper, and arrested them.
Witnesses said the security operatives came in about 10 cars and first stormed the house of Aliyu Saleh, a reporter who resides in Rigasa, Kaduna.
After rough-handling Mr. Saleh and his wife, the couple were arrested at about 4:00 a.m. from where they were conveyed to the next destination of the security agents.
The next stop for the men in guns was the house of the editor of the paper, Musa Awwal, who was also man-handled alongside his wife. When the police were through with harassing the couples, they left the two women and arrested the two journalists.
The journalists have been taken to an unknown destination.
Reasons for Gestapo attack.
PIt was gathered that the reason for the actions of the security agencies is the latest story written by Al-Mizan.
The story, with the headline, “Atrocities of JTF in Potiskum,” narrated how the Joint Task Force in Yobe State have been engaging in extra-judicial arrests and murder of innocent citizens.
The story narrated how 84 young men were arrested some weeks ago in Yobe by the JTF in Potiskum, and how the whereabouts of the men were unknown as at the time of publication of the story.
The story is said to have angered security agencies who felt the story would incite the local Hausa populace against security forces.
The Kaduna State Police Command also said claimed ignorance of the arrest.

Former RCCG pastor berates Adeboye for welcoming politicians in to their annual Holy Ghost congress

A former pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Bankole Solomon, has condemned what he described as the politicization of the church's annual Holy Ghost congress.
Pastor Bankole, a lawyer and the Ogun State Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), expressed the position on Facebook.
Speaking later to SaharaReporters by telephone, he said his position was aimed at President Goodluck Jonathan's appearance at the congress as a tool for political manipulation of members of the popular church, and Christians at large, but was not an attack on the church and its leadership.
He described Holy Ghost congress as having become “a supermarket where all kinds of people like charlatans and political opportunists come shopping turning God to Father Xmas to give them end-of-year bonus.”
Mr. Solomon said he was very unhappy at the rate at which his famed church voluntarily surrenders its sacred podium to corrupt politicians when pastors working hard in the church are being denied the same access to the podium.
President Goodluck Jonathan, he said, was there “turning our once sacred altar to political podium talking deceitfully & indirectly campaigning for 2015.”
He questioned the basis for that decision, given that Mr. Jonathan is not a pastor.
The lawyer, who said he resigned from the ministry of the RCCG in 2010 for personal reasons, predicted in his post that members of the church would harass and harangue him for coming out clearly to condemn the way the church has been turned to a den of thieves.
SaharaReporters can confirm that that is already happening.  Mr. Bankole has been receiving threats, cursing and harassment from members across the world. Bankole however says he stands by his earlier position, but expressed surprise at the attacks.
Below is Pastor Bankole's posting about the issue yesterday on his Facebook Wall:
I know this post will attract a sharp condemnation because I worship in RCCG & I was once a pastor before I resigned voluntarily because of rights violations in the name of religion.
I resigned in   December 2010.
But am still worshiping in there as an ordinary member.
So, whatever. I have here is without prejudice.
Holy ghost congress of our great church is now a political congress where all shades of corrupt leaders will mount our altar to fool Nigerians on what they will do.
Holy Ghost congress is now a supermarket where all kinds of people like charlatans & political opportunist come shopping turning God to father Xmas to give them end of d year bonus.
Jonathan was even there turning our once sacred altar to political podium talking deceitfully & indirectly campaigning for 2015.
My question is this? On what ground was president Jonathan allowed to speak to people. Is he a pastor? Because d gathering is purely spiritual gathering & event. I've been a pastor in Redeemed for d past 10 years & I've not got any opportunity to sit on that altar not to talk of holding microphone. If because Jonathan is a president & he is recognized, it means some are more equal than others.
Immediately, I left camp on Saturday morning, I looked at the camp very well because I know that would be d last time I will set my foot to that Eagle square called Redeemed camp.

The Kidnap Syndicate in Delta By Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South-South(Vanguard)

KIDNAPPING (read man-stealing) has metamorphosed into such a very big industry in Delta State that it currently has a
loose association, comprising graduates and undergraduates with an organized set-up and leadership.
Our investigations showed that it is no longer a case of the money-making kidnappers abducting and looking for where to hide their captives from security agents. There are four major departments in the industry.  The first is the abduction squad, which kidnaps victims. The second is the transportation/receiver unit, which is in-charge of shepherding the victims to secret locations and keeping them in hideouts.
The third group is the negotiation department, which negotiates ransom with relations of victims and others; the fourth is the security department. The duty of the fourth  group is to provide round-the-clock security in the dens and other hideaways where victims are kept until ransom  is paid for their release. All these groups are armed.
An insider confided in Sunday Vanguard that the kingpin of the kidnapping syndicate at the moment in Delta State is one Kelvin from Kokori, Ethiope-East Local Government Area.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, confirmed the restricted information in an interview in Asaba on Tuesday, saying, “Kelvin is the most dangerous kidnapper in Delta State and we are looking for him”.
Aduba said Kelvin was training kidnappers and was recruiting graduates and undergraduates, as well as Okada (motorcycle) riders into his underworld team.
The commissioner  asserted that the kingpin  has so many kidnap gangs and the police have been finding it difficult to track him, while practically all Okada men in that axis  are his  informants.
It was alleged  that Kelvin’s parents  know about the involvement of their son in kidnapping , as they reside in the same neighbourhood,  but, because of the modus operandi and influence of the syndicate, it has been very difficult for the police to make a breakthrough, as information always leaked information on imminent crackdown to him.
Kidnapping nerve center
Our findings corroborated by a dependable source showed that the operational headquarters of the kidnapping industry in the state now is  Kokori. Victims abducted from several parts of the state are whisked there for the next stage of the business.
Other alleged  hot dens of kidnappers are Ekampreme, Agbarho and Ovwian, all in the Delta Central Senatorial District.  The presence of the former chair of the defunct Delta Waterways Security Committee, DWSC, Warri, Chief Ayiri Emami, at Ubeji area is scaring kidnappers from using Jeddo as an operational base.
How it started
Kidnapping as an industry is a new development in the state. As a weapon in the Niger-Delta struggle, it was introduced by militants, who kidnapped foreign nationals to draw attention to the plight of the people of the region. It was supported because the purpose was not self-centered. Unfortunately, some criminals in the struggle veered into commercial kidnapping, that is kidnapping for money.
They kidnapped both expatriates and blacks, including politicians and  the affluent. People did not raise eyebrows, as they even said it was good for the victims. Now, kidnappers not only seize footballers, judges, teachers, lawyers, journalists, they abduct children for ransom.
One of the governors, who saw the dangerous trend early in the day was Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan. He quickly set up the defunct DWSC on assumption of office to tackle the menace, which was principally committed on the waterways. However, the kidnappers shifted base from the creek to land, which is outside the mandate of the committee. The DWSC was quietly dissolved and a joint force of soldiers, police, navy and other security services, put in place to battle kidnappers on land.
The battle has not been easy, as the kidnappers developped  sophisticated ways of carrying out their operations whenever security operatives inched closer. This, probably, explains why the police have not been able to catch Kelvin, the alleged most dangerous kidnapper in the state, even when they know his base to be Kokori.
Top officials
Some top officials,  within and outside government, are said to be  involved in the kidnapping industry because they  make money from it.
These persons have their gangs and act as intermediaries between government and  kidnappers when the demand for ransom  is placed. Politicians even use kidnappers against themselves. The officials involved will not want the industry to fold up because it is their major source of income. What goes for them is that because of their status in the society, people do not easily suspect that it is their line of business and they get patronage from government unsuspectingly.
They join in the search for kidnappers whenever they  are invited, but they know what they are benefitting.
Smaller gangs
Besides Kelvin, there are smaller gangs of kidnappers scattered in  Delta, but they are not structured. Sometimes, one or two bad boys agree to kidnap one or two persons and make money and they put their plan into action.
There is also a kidnap gang in the state suspected to be led by the younger brother of an ex-militant leader  shot dead by the Joint Task Force in Bayelsa  State, in the first quarter of this year.  The gang is still operates on the waterways of the state and was alleged to have kidnapped the two Lebanese workers of Setraco Construction Company, recently, at Gbaregolor  in Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Up till date, the gang that kidnapped the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Hope Eghagha, and kept him for up to three weeks in their custody after killing his police orderly and injuring his driver, has not been identified, but it is believed to be led by one Bukumo and David.
Kidnap leaders in detention
However, the police have arrested some of those who initiated profit-making kidnapping on land in Delta. A number of them are currently on remand in the prisons for different offences. What is happening, nevertheless, is that that while they are incarcerated, their boys are carrying on, and under a new structure with  Kelvin as godfather.
One of those detained, according to sources, is  Rufus, alias Infinity. He is in detention in the Federal Prisons, Okere, near Warri, and  was  alleged to be the leader of the kidnap gang that struck in Kaduna, Abuja, Kogi and other states. The gang whisked their victims to Delta  State and hid them in a privately owned hotel, from where they called their families, demanded and obtained ransoms in naira and dollars.
That time, they kidnapped outside the state and brought their victims to the state for ransom. Infinity’s boys are believed to be  still intact and carrying on with the business even though  he is in detention.

Liverpool's Stewart Downing put in an impressive

Liverpool's Stewart Downing put in an impressive display as the Reds overwhelmed a tame Fulham to move up to eighth in the Premier League.
Martin Skrtel controlled a Steven Gerrard corner and powered in a shot to put the home side in front.
Downing's piercing ball then set up Gerrard to drive in Liverpool's second.
'Excellent' Liverpool impress Rodgers
Winger Downing cut inside and rifled in a shot for his first Premier League goal for the Reds, before Luis Suarez side-footed in to seal an emphatic win.
Downing claims he has been told he can leave Liverpool, but his lively display against the Cottagers suggests he wants to stay and fight for his place.
The 28-year-old helped raise Liverpool's hopes of reasserting a challenge for a top-four place as the Anfield club moved five points off the Champions League places.
Fulham had problems in midfield with Steve Sidwell, Bryan Ruiz and Mahamadou Diarra missing, but manager Martin Jol will be concerned at the meek surrender of a side which has one win in 10 top-flight outings.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said his team were determined to put right the wrongs of last week's 3-1 home defeat by Aston Villa and the Reds quickly showed the pace, movement and intensity to echo their manager's words on the pitch.
Unmarked centre-back Daniel Agger headed a driven corner over the Fulham goal and Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey had a clever flicked effort from Downing's low cross deflected wide.
Analysis
Alistair Mann BBC Match of the Day commentator
"A deserved win for Liverpool. From the opening whistle to the final one, they were far and away the better side. Steven Gerrard was in exquisite form and Stewart Downing was excellent. A miserable evening for Fulham."
Fulham had not learnt from those scares and the home side took the lead when defender Skrtel was allowed the time and space to control Gerrard's corner before thundering in a shot.
The early goal only served to increase the appetite and the Reds should have added another goal only for a lunging Agger to sidefoot over from close range after a low Suarez cross.
Fulham midfielder Kieran Richardson's swerving shot almost caught Pepe Reina out before he saved the effort with his legs but the visitors fell further behind after 36 minutes.
The much-maligned Downing provided his first assist in 45 Premier League appearances for the Reds when he slid a precise ball through the heart of the Cottagers' defence to Gerrard, who angled a shot past keeper Mark Schwarzer.
A deflected Downing cross set up Suarez for a gilt-edged chance at the far post shortly after the interval but the Uruguayan sent his six-yard shot wide.
Jol wants to forget defeat
Downing was playing in a preferred right-wing berth as opposed to the left-back spot he has sometimes had to fill and took it upon himself to add Liverpool's third as he cut inside before drilling a left-footed shot past Schwarzer.
Fulham were hugely outplayed and it was one-way traffic as Liverpool constantly threatened more goals.
Suarez bustled his was through the Cottagers' defence only to be foiled by a smothering Schwarzer save and the striker also had a well-struck free-kick tipped around the post by the 'keeper.
Reina saved a Hugo Rodallega free-kick before Suarez rounded off his side's win by converting a Jose Enrique cut-back for his 11th league goal of the season.
Fulham manager Martin Jol: "Of course you will say that Liverpool were great today, but they weren't
"I don't think that we played well. It is disappointing, the second half was a bit better, Karim Frei showed some spirit, but it was bad defending on the third goal as we backed off.
"On the fourth goal from the corner kick it was almost too easy.
Our intentions were to play the ball to the front three and get Berbatov into the game and support from midfield - we didn't do it."

Monti resigns as Italian prime minister.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti handed in his resignation Friday to President Giorgio Napolitano, the Italian government press office said.
The move comes after Parliament approved a budget by a vote of 309-55, with five abstentions, said ANSA, the state-run news agency.
Monti will outline his plans Sunday but will not say until afterward whether he plans to run in elections expected to be held February 24, ANSA said, citing "sources."
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti

An economist and former European commissioner, Monti was appointed by Napolitano to fill former premier Silvio Berlusconi's place after he resigned last year under pressure for failing to control Italy's debt and a series of scandals.
Since then, international investors have displayed confidence in the country's finances. Italy's borrowing costs have fallen this year on Monti's efforts to bring down borrowing and the improved sentiment generated by the European Central Bank's conditional scheme to buy bonds of struggling sovereigns.
Berlusconi has criticized Monti's austerity policies as damaging to the country. Berlusconi's party, the People of Freedom, is the largest in Parliament.
While Monti's economic reforms have been popular with investors, earning him the nickname "Super Mario," the measures have not pleased the Italian public, although protests have been more muted than in Spain or Greece.
Italy is in a recession, and further belt-tightening will be unpopular with its citizens.
The unemployment rate in Italy rose to 11.1% in October, marking a 13-year high, and the Italian economy has contracted for five consecutive quarters. As of the third quarter, its economic growth was down 2.4% from a year earlier.
However, investors have welcomed Monti's effort to cut down on the nation's debt, and Italy's borrowing costs have fallen dramatically since the country made economic changes. After drifting above 7% a year ago, the yield on Italy's 10-year government bond has fallen to about 4.5% recently.
Monti's term was originally set to expire in mid-2013, but his earlier departure is expected to bring elections forward. Elections must be held within 70 days of the dissolution of Parliament.
Berlusconi has announced that he intends to run for re-election in the new year.

Pope Benedict pardons former butler Paolo Gabriele

Pope Benedict XVI has pardoned his former butler, Paolo Gabriele, who is serving an 18-month jail sentence for stealing confidential papers.
The Pope visited Gabriele in prison to personally inform him of the decision, the Vatican said in a statement.

The Pope informed Gabriele of his decision in person

In October the former butler was found guilty of stealing and copying the Pope's documents and leaking them to an Italian journalist.
Gabriele said he acted out of love for the Church.
"This morning the Holy Father Benedict XVI visited Paolo Gabriele in prison in order to confirm his forgiveness and to inform him personally of his acceptance of Mr Gabriele's request for pardon," the Vatican statement said.
Following Gabriele's conviction by a Vatican court, officials said he was likely to be pardoned by the pontiff.
In November the court convicted a computer expert, Claudio Sciarpelletti, of helping leak the papal documents.
Sciarpelletti was given a suspended sentence of two months.
Gabriele's trial heard that he had taken advantage of his access to the pontiff to photocopy thousands of confidential documents.
He later passed some to journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, who this year released a best-selling book detailing scandals and infighting within the Vatican.
Gabriele confessed to taking the papers, but said he believed the Pope was being manipulated and hoped to reveal alleged corruption at the Holy See.

President Obama Launches Gun-Violence Task Force By JAKE TAPPER (@jaketapper) , DEVIN DWYER (@devindwyer) and MARY BRUCE(@marykbruce) WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2012

Five days after deadliest elementary school shooting in U.S. history,President Obama said his administration plans immediate action early next year on proposals to curb an "epidemic of gun violence."
At a morning news conference, Obama announced the formation of a task force to be headed by Vice President Joe Biden that will formulate a package of policy recommendations by January.
"The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing," Obama said. "The fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean that we can't steadily reduce the violence and prevent the very worst violence."
The president said he intends to push for implementation of the proposals "without delay."
"This is not some Washington commission. This is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside.
"This is a team that has a very specific task to pull together real reforms right now," he said.
While Obama did not offer specifics, he suggested the task force would examine an array of steps to curb gun violence and prevent mass shootings, including legislative measures, mental health resources and a "look more closely at a culture that all-too-often glorifies guns and violence."
He urged Congress to confirm a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which has been without an official leader for six years. Obama also expressed his longstanding desire to see the national background check system strengthened and a ban on the sale of some assault-style weapons reinstated.
"I will use all the powers of this office to help advance efforts aimed at preventing more tragedies like this," Obama said.
Obama made similar pronouncements following at least four other mass shootings that marked his first term. Butfew policy changes were made.
"This is not the first incident of horrific gun violence of your four years. Where have you been?," asked ABC News' Jake Tapper.
"I've been president of the United States, dealing with the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, an auto industry on the verge of collapse, two wars. I don't think I've been on vacation," Obama responded.
In the coming weeks, Biden will lead a working group that includes top officials from the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, Education and Health and Human Services to draft an action plan.
Obama met privately Monday with Biden and three members of his Cabinet — Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Attorney General Eric Holder and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius — to discuss steps forward in the aftermath of Newtown.
The vice president's new role is rooted in his experience as a U.S. Senator with writing and shepherding into law the 1994 Crime Bill and chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees criminal justice issues.
The 1994 Crime Bill included the ban on certain types of semi-automatic rifles (better known as the "assault weapons ban") and new classes of people banned from owning or possessing firearms, in addition to expanding the federal death penalty and the Violence Against Women Act.

Capital One Cup:Leeds 1 Chelsea 5

The Blues only this week jetted back from Japan, where they lost in the Club World Cup final to Corinthians.

Yet there were no tired excuses at Elland Road as goals from Juan Mata, Branislav Ivanovic, Victor Moses, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres swept the visitors to victory.

The Argy hotshot tucked home Jerome Thomas’ pin-point 37th-minute cross to give the European champions a fright.
But that only lasted only ten minutes as Mata levelled things up just after the break.

Commander Daba: Pilot Of The Crashed Helicopter - A Tribute by Pain

Navy Commander Daba, the ex-boy who was the pilot of the ill-fated Augusta 105 helicopter that crashed on 15th December, 2012 was newly promoted with his coursemates (46 Regular Course). He was one year ahead of me at the Nigerian Military School Zaria. He was the smallest in stature among his coursemates, but he had a very big heart. This a tribute to him:

1. The death of Commander Muritala Mohammed Daba leaves a huge vacuum in our lives. According to news reports he died on active duty while flying the governor of Kaduna state and the immediate past National Security Adviser in a Nigerian Navy helicopter. We mourn not because we are naive about human mortality, fretful for our turn or impudent of God’s prerogative. It is Gods privilege alone to give life and every officer in the Nigerian Navy, Army or Air Force knew the risks before we bravely signed up. Naturally, the statistics for death are startling. One in every one will die, as none of us will leave this life alive. However, even the heavens applaud the brilliance of a shooting star and Commander Daba did shine. If the situation was reversed Oga would not bother with the circumstances of death like some do. He would smile and say “Allah Yayisah”. Well I am not that charitable. This is the second day since Al-Jazeera broke the news and we are in more shock than the first day. Despite the hurt in our hearts our thoughts and prayers go out to his family especially his beautiful wife and lovely daughter.

2. Every time I am privileged to witness the glory of a military wedding ceremony, my first amazement is the sparkle in the bride’s eye not the glitz of participating in the sword crossing ceremony. It fills me with awe that these amazing women dare to become what late Hajia Maryam Babangida calls the “Officers Wife”. It is incredible that any woman (or man) would accept to marry a man (or woman) who’s very job demands obedience without complaint and loyalty without restraint. Why would anyone want to settle with a military partner who is trained to love Country first, God second and then spouse/family in that order? At all times an officer’s wife waves her husband good bye without any guarantee he will return. Others live a life of sacrifice and loneliness. These superwomen wives often have to deal with long months without their partners because he is on assignment in another state, country or continent. It seems these courageous spouses essentially sign up to serve their nation along with their military spouses. Consequently officers and men are forever grateful to God for friends and family knowing that any moment could be the last. They hold their wives and family with high esteem and Oga Daba was no exception loving his wife and daughter till death.

3. Oga Daba was not just a compassionate father and faithful husband, he was a consummate professional. Since graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy with a bachelor’s degree he has served his country both ashore and afloat. Commander Daba completed several courses within and outside Nigeria and earned his wings as a member of the elite squad of Nigerian Navy helicopter pilots. During one of his numerous trips to Italy we met up in Amsterdam for an unforgettable 36 hours in 2008. He told me of how he escaped racists in Hungary with “Regular” moves and military alacrity. Rather than save his course allowance as most officers on course would traditionally do, he chose like me to travel and see the world as means to understanding other people’s and cultures. He believed in a border-less world where race, tribe, wealth, nationality and religion could be defining but certainly not definitive. Lots of things happened that fateful day in Amsterdam but two of the actors will never speak and one is now gone.

4. Yet to live in the hearts and minds of those whose life you have impacted is never to die. As officers and men all over the world keep a stiff upper lip and grieve in silence, I will end with three lessons I learned from Commander Daba and for which he would be forever missed.

Lesson one. You do not need to be wealthy to be generous.

I am not certain how rich he was on Saturday 13 December 2012 when he piloted the Navy Augusta helicopter from Bayelsa to Port Harcourt but I do know that in 2002, I was so broke that I could not afford to fuel my Honda Accord. This was a time when a one week delay in salary payment or “NG” could wreck a new officer’s budget and a two week delay meant disaster. In between pay checks I asked Mac Olowu to “raise” me. He was in the same broke-boat but took me to Oga Daba who himself did not have. Within minutes Oga Daba took me in his car to another officer’s house in Arakan Barracks, borrowed from the officer without disclosing my identity, lent to me and never accepted the money back. I still do not know the officer he met but anyone that knew Oga will not be surprised that he could go to such lengths for a junior officer.

Lesson Two. Respect is best earned not demanded.

The first thing that struck you on meeting him is his cheerful, humble and honest personality. This became most evident during the Junior Staff College course 59/2005 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College. In true “onward together” fashion, he gracefully took “yabs” (petty jokes/ amusing insults) from my course mates who were the most junior on the course and sometimes returned “yabs” of his own. His initial pilot training meant that he had to attend this course with his juniors. Yet you could not tell how senior he was, because he would laugh, motivate and teach fellow syndicate members in an affable manner that endeared him to everyone but never diminished him. At no time did any of us his juniors “try” him. We just trusted him to help, advice and understand because he always did.
Lesson Three. True friendship has no boundaries. Think outside the box.

Oga Daba was my superior but more importantly he was a friend. In too many instances and in so many ways he was there. After several stints abroad I have painfully discovered how easy it is to lose track of friends, colleagues and most surprising of all course mates for many reasons. Yet the last time I spoke to Oga Daba was the same day he departed this world. I was on my way from Lebanon where I presented a research paper at the IEEE ACTEA 2012 conference. We discussed how pleasant my trip to Lebanon was, marriage conundrums (for me) and the significance of my research. In typical Daba style, he started the conversation at 8:38 PM Friday Lebanon time (GMT+2) and sent his last message 12:32 AM Saturday (see the blackberry screen shot).
